Baby Elephants on Holidays

by Travel With Kidz on April 20, 2012

BABY ELEPHANTS SIGHTED AT ANGSANA LAGUNA PHUKET

Families staying at the Angsana Laguna Phuket are in for a real treat: housed at the resort are two baby elephants available to make friends with children playing at the resort’s tree house-inspired Kids Club.  Chokdee and Yindee can be accompanied on their leisurely strolls along the sandy shores of Bang Tao Bay, during their bath time in the emerald waters of the Andaman Sea, or during their afternoons spent at the Kids Club.

Baby Elephant Angsana Phuket

Comfortably housed and cared for in a spacious pavilion within Laguna Phuket’s integrated resort complex, the elephants are a symbol of Angsana’s commitment to driving sustainable development on the island. Chokdee and Yindee might otherwise be walking the streets of Bangkok performing circus acts for tourists, which is the unfortunate fate for many domesticated young elephants as a result of the mechanisation of the logging industry.

“Despite their iconic status in the country, these gentle animals are oftentimes mistreated,” says David Campion, Group Director of CSR Operations for Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts. “By developing systems and practices approved by Richard Lair, Advisor to the National Elephant Institute of Thailand, we offer a more pleasant way of life that also helps to educate our guests about Thailand and its unique environment.”

Chokdee and Yindee visit the resort daily, and gladly accept invitations to private functions. Imagine having a baby elephant at your childrens birthday party, now that would be cool! The elephants can often be found simply playing, walking and swimming with their mahouts, or full-time caretakers, who form a life-long bond and nurture them as if they were their own children. For something really special on your next family holiday book an elephant!

Do you love white sand beaches?

by Travel With Kidz on April 12, 2012

Heron Island

Heron Island is a true coral cay, located right on the Great Barrier Reef. The island is ribboned by sugar white sands, crystal clear waters and acres of brilliant coral with beautifully coloured marine life – a real nature lover’s paradise.

Heron offers many activities such as guided island and reef walks and semi-submersible cruises. An amazing array of animal and bird life can also be discovered right throughout the year. And of course, Heron is world famous for its scuba diving and snorkelling.

Great Barrier Reef School Holiday Activities

Heron Island offers young visitors a unique range of interesting and educational experiences. Children aged 7 to 12 can join Heron Island’s Junior Ranger Program, which operates during Australian eastern seaboard school holidays (or through prior arrangement outside of this period).

Heron Island’s newly revised Junior Rangers Program has been developed by Heron Island’s experienced team of Marine Biologists and Naturalist Guides, with the co-operation of the University of Queensland, and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

The Junior Rangers Program offers a range of nature based activities designed to nurture a sense of exploration and caring for the environment, from reef walks, bird-watching and beachcombing through to tree planting and even the opportunity to design and run your own resort island. Junior Ranger activities contribute to the earning of a variety of colourful embroidered badges, from the ‘Three-Kilometre Badge’ through to the highly prized ‘Junior Ranger Badge’.

snorkelling off the island is a highlight

A one-off registration fee (AUD $65) applies for each Junior Ranger participant with fees generating funds for the Queensland Turtle Conservation Program. Registration costs cover the provision of a Junior Rangers Workbook, Junior Ranger Hat, embroidered badges, and Junior Ranger activities throughout the duration of your stay.

Heron Island is a haven of marine colour and relaxation, with magical ocean views from many of the rooms. This family friendly property allows children to stay and eat free, utilising existing bedding. Ask you Travel With Kidz consultant for an update on “whats happening on Heron” in the wildlife department. As you know wildlife is seasonal and Heron is a haven for above water and underwater wildlife. Visit www.travelwithkidz.com.au/agent-finder and to obtain your families quote.

Family Holidays With Teenagers can be FUN!

by Travel With Kidz on March 23, 2012

The recipe to a successful family holiday with teenagers.

If the prospect of your teenager slamming doors, getting bored and skulking away with friends every weekend looms on your horizon, rather than spending quality time with the very people who brought them into the world, take heart!

Camel riding with your kids

Amongst the recent trends to emerge in travel, trips for parents to spend more one-on-one time with their teenage children during their fraught high school years have becoming increasingly popular.

There is an increasing demand for packages which cater to the specific needs of parents wanting time alone with their teenage children, often away from the pressure of school, peer groups and even the competition for attention from other siblings.

Once children become young teenagers and enter their high school years, it becomes harder to find a window of opportunity to incorporate meaningful, one-on-one time with their parents to strengthen their relationship, away from the distraction of homework, domestic routines, sports training and the considerable influence of their peers.

Paris with the kids is amazing and a lifetime expetiene

Mother/daughter shopping and spa trips and father/son adventure trips are currently becoming more and more popular with families with teenagers. What teenage girl would knock back a shopping trip to Hong Kong or Melbourne or a week at a spa retreat in Byron Bay? The boys love to be active and a fishing trip up in Kakadu or watching your favourite tennis, golf or rugby stars live are great options for father/son breaks.

When it comes to a family holiday with teenagers planning is the key ingredient to success. Parents need to involve the children from the early planning stage.

The recipe to a successful teenage holiday:

 1)      Plan the trip at least 6-12 months

2)      As a family decide on where you would like to holiday.  Are you an active family, enjoy history, appreciate wildlife, beach lover, shopaholic or a theme park junkie?

3)      Decide on the family budget. Have your kids financially contribute to the holiday by giving up that new pair of jeans or have them do a part time job. They have will have a far greater appreciation of the holiday.

4)      Apartments are a great option with teenagers. They offer separate sleeping areas, lounge room and kitchen facilities and often 2 bathrooms. Who wants to share a bathroom with a teenager! Teenagers love to talk and be social so choose accommodation that offers a pool, games rooms and a gym.

5)      The one day on and one day off rule. Every second day is an adult day and the other a teenagers/child day.

6)      What did we do before WIFI? Ensure your teenager is on mobile phone prepaid and research prior where free WIFI is available allowing them to catch up with friends back home.

7)      Prepay and prebook! The more you prepay in A$ the more you will eliminate arguments on the trip. Meals, transport, accommodation and tours are able to be prepaid for most destinations.

8)      Involve the children in setting a daily budget.

9)      Each family member has their own back pack with a bottle of water, a good book and IPOD.

10)   A relaxed and positive attitude. The most important ingredient to a successful family holiday with teenagers which will grow organically if you follow the recipe.

Our feedback from parents and their children is that these holidays are some of the most enjoyable and fun filled of their lives and brings them closer to their teenagers through shared interests and experiences. Whether that is a week in Bali surfing, shopping and lazing by the pool or hiking up Mt Blanc in France you will create a lifetime of memories for the whole family.

Family Ski Holiday tips

by Travel With Kidz on March 2, 2012

A ski holiday brings the whole family together while being active during the day and snuggling up with a hot chocolate in front of an open fire at night. Family ski holidays include skiing, snowboarding, playing in the snow and for the non-skiers or tired legs in the family its important you have lots to do in the day including snowmobile tours, heli- skiing, paragliding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowshoeing and ice skating.

There is a wide variety of countries all promising fabulous snow and facilities though based on 16 years of experience we have put together an exciting “taste of skiing for families in Canada and America”.

A taste of skiing in America with your kids

With the Aussie dollar currently sky rocketing there is no better time to head to America for some fabulous northern hemisphere skiing. Families have the added bonus of being able to stop in Disneyland and Universal Studios on the way back through Los Angeles.

American ski resorts offer spectacular scenery and impressive terrain on which to ski. Skiing in the US is all about convenience, and it’s the attention to detail which makes a US ski holiday such a pleasurable experience. Attentive guest service is a high priority and most resorts have a comprehensive range of ski school programs and options. Resorts in the US are littered with high speed lifts to enable fast access to vast expanses of terrain, and are renowned for their well-groomed trails, well planned trail design and variety of terrain. This allows for all standards of skiers and riders to enjoy easy navigation and access to all areas of the mountain. The American season generally opens late November and closes late April giving you heaps of time.

Two family favourites are Aspen Snowmass Village and Aspen. Aspen Snowmass is only seven miles from downtown Aspen in the heart of Snowmass Base Village. Viceroy Snowmass luxury Resort offers ski-in/ski-out lodging in the heart of the village, restaurants and Generation V kids club. The hotel is ideally situated for families only minutes from Aspen/Snowmass Treehouse children’s centre the most amazing kid’s adventure centre in America. The Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Centre boasts a family-friendly activities, Ski & Snowboard Schools check-in, rental, retail and family après entertainment all under one roof. The facility is linked to a system of seven new lifts, including kid-friendly gondolas and magic carpets. There are flights direct from Los Angeles to Aspen throughout the ski season.

The Gant offers self-contained condominiums which are located in the heart of Aspen. The Gant is renowned for delivering exceptional service including daily housekeeping, van transport and concierge.

Steamboat Springs Colorado has over 164 trails, 3,668 vertical feet, and nearly 3,000 ski able acres, Steamboat’s 6 peaks are filled with world-class groomed cruisers, bumps, steeps, open meadows, legendary trees and Mavericks – North America’s longest super pipe. Steamboat’s kids’ programs are recognized as some of the top kids programs in the U.S. The Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel offers a variety of hotel rooms, one, two & three bedroom suites & luxurious penthouses. The hotel is located at the base of the mountain and only a short walk to the lifts and the many surrounding restaurants. Families are able to fly into Denver and drive up to Steamboat or fly direct into Hayden and catch the shuttle.

So why ski Canada?

Big White is Canada’s largest ski in ski out village offering fabulous family actives including Ice Climbing Tower, Mega Snow Coaster tube park, Snowmobile tours, Ice Skating & hockey, Snowshoeing, Dog Sledding , Horse drawn sleigh rides and the famous fireworks. Truly the ultimate ski resort for families wanting a lot of snow.

Stonebridge Condominiums is a family favourite featuring 88 fully equipped executive suites within three separate buildings. Stonebridge is located beside the Bullet Express chairlift providing guests with incomparable ski-in/ski-out access in the heart of Big White village. Most units have a private hot tub & fireplace, perfect after a day skiing. Nannies can be arranged upon arrival.

Silver Star Resort is inspired by a typical nineteenth century British Columbian mining town era with colourful Victorian architecture. The friendly and relaxed village atmosphere creates the ideal environment for a ski holiday.

Firelight Lodge is where you want to be at Silver Star. The perfect base camp for great adventures, ski from your door directly onto the Silver Queen Chair and up to your choice of 115 thrilling powder-rich runs. Designed with families in mind, Firelight offers a grand central plaza with custom outdoor fire pits, outdoor hot tubs and underground parking. All 2 bedroom condominiums feature full kitchen, gas fireplace, in suite laundry, flat screen TV with DVD and built-in gear storage. Both Big White and Silver Star are accessible via Kelona Airport an easy one hour flight from Vancouver.

Whistler is located an easy 3 hour drive from Vancouver by coach or car.  A visit to Whistler / Blackcomb Mountains is a must for unforgettable skiing, snowboarding and activities and the only resort in North America where you can ski or ride on a glacier.  It is perfect for those non ski bunnies having a very large township.

Delta Whistler Village Suites is a charming all-suite hotel located in the heart of the heart of the village offering beautifully appointed with breathtaking mountain and valley views. The one and two bedroom suites are perfect for families as they offer all the comforts of home including full kitchens and in-suite washer dryer. Nannies are available.

Family ski holiday tips from the experts

1)    It is essential to pre-book ski school for your kids especially in school holidays

2)    Don’t hire your ski gear until you arrive at the mountain, it may not fit and you will be unable to change sizes.

3)    On snow hotels are worth the extra money. Kids do not like sitting in cars or transfer buses each morning and afternoon to the gondolas and chair lifts.

4)    Prepay everything including lift tickets, accommodation, ski school, meals when possible.

5)    Research prior to your arrival what activities are offered for non-ski days. Tired legs, injury or non-skiers are able to have a fun snow holiday.

6)    Stopping in a warm beach destination on the way back when possible after a ski holiday is a great idea.

7)    Plan ahead, if planning to buy ski gear plan the year prior and head for the sales. Savings of up to 50% are common at the end of season sale time.

8)    Buy your kids their own helmets. You need to ensure the helmet is “Australian standards” and has not been in an accident.

9)    Prepare your legs for skiing including the kids. A few squats and lots of hill climbs a few weeks prior will help you enjoy your trip

10) When possible avoid local school holiday periods to minimise the waiting time at lifts in Australia. Waiting time in the northern hemisphere is minimal due to the huge number of runs and chair lifts.

11) Do not leave home without it, travel insurance. It is essential to have travel insurance as accidents are common on the ski fields and emergency evacuation services are very expensive.

Are You Surviving the School Holidays?

by Travel With Kidz on January 10, 2012

Christmas is now over for another year and the worlds icon buildings including our own Sydney Harbour Bridge have been lit up to celebrate the beginning of another year so now is the time to tell the world about your best/worst/funniest family holiday experience. Having just spent 2 weeks with our 2 year old granddaughter Emily at Nanna and Poppy’s house we now appreciate how hard it is to keep children busy over the long holiday period.

Travelling with children can be fun with research and speaking to an expert. Travel With Kidz has been specialising in family travel for the past 16 years.

Here is our list of top ten things to do with the kids before they grow up:

1)    Climb the steps of Angkor Wat Cambodia and view history engraved on the walls.

2) Sit with indigenous Australians at Ayers Rock and learn the art of dot painting.

3) Learn to ski and make snowmen at Thredbo Village.

4) Play volleyball with Fijians on white sand beaches.

5) Swim with dolphins at Dolphin Quest, Hawaii.

6) Walk down Broadway in New York and ride the lift to the top of the Empire State Building.

7) Visit the Pope’s home in Vatican City Rome. Climb the steps of St. Peters and view Rome from its peak.

8) Experience a magical Christmas under the Northern Lights with an unforgettable visit to Santa’s home town in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland.

9) Introduce the kids to Mickey Mouse at Disneyland– it never fails to capture their imaginations.

10) Dance with the Masai in the Masi Mara National Park Kenya and watch lions under a tree on the great plains of the Mara.

As today’s children grow up faster and spend less time with their parents than ever before, many families are structuring holidays which offer not only a break from the routine but a learning experience for everyone.

After 34 years’ experience in the travel business – more than a third of that catering to the holiday needs of families – Wendy Buckley, Managing Director of Travel With Kidz, is well placed to comment on how family holidays are changing.

“Many time-poor families are no longer content with the traditional two-week annual holiday to the coast,” she said. “They are beginning to think ‘quality not quantity’ and are demanding more active and interesting breaks.”

“Young children’s brains are more open to learning and far more impressionable than adults,” she said. “Now is the time to spend quality time with your kids before they grow up.”

What is your favourite experience with your kids? Email wendy@travelwithkidz.com.au to post your blogs and experiences.

Happy 2012 from the Travel With Kidz family
